Fortune is for DOS only.

If you run Windows, you can run Fortune before you go into windows. If
it's Windows 95, just make it boot DOS first. Bring up a DOS box, and use
ATTRIB on your MSDOS.SYS file (attrib -r -s -h c:\msdos.sys). Then, edit
the line that says "BootGUI=1" to read "BootGUI=0" instead. Save the file,
put the attributes back (attrib +s +r +h c:\msdos.sys), and the next time
you reboot, you'll always need to type WIN to start Windows 95!

To install the fortune program, put FORTUNE.EXE in your path, put the two
BYE.* files in C:\RANDOM (sorry, I hardcoded the path), and that's it.

Fortune ? gives help. If you want source, it's Pascal, just ask.
