Subject: [DHBIS] Deborah Harry Quotations
Hey, all,
I'm looking for some information. On my webpage, I have a definite lack of
DH information, basically because a lot of other sites (Louis' especially!)
have done such a bang-up job on Deb and Blondie that there's not much left
to say. HOWEVER, I came up with an idea of doing a page called "The Wit And
Wisdom Of Deborah Harry," which will be a collection of quotations that Deb
has made in interviews (print or TV). Now, I know that some people tend to
make remarks such as "Debbie's an incredible talent, but when interviewed
she comes off a bit flakey," etc. It is MY contention, however, that it's
the fault of the interview medium and not a lack of intellect on Debbie's
part that causes her to come off rather odd at times. When extracted as
quotations, Debbie's comments on a wide range of topics are extraordinarily
insightful.
So, what I'm requesting from anybody who wants to help me out is this: send
me your favourite Debbie quotation(s) along with the source (i.e. what
magazine or TV show and at least an approximate date and year), your email
address and webpage address, and when I compile my page I'll give everyone
credit who contributes a submission.
I myself will be combing through "Making Tracks," but this will be rather
arduous as Debbie said lots of interesting things in the whole book. Feel
free to tell me your favourite bits from "Making Tracks" anyway.
Also, no song lyrics. I know, Deb's an awesome lyricist, but that would be
a bit redundant, now, wouldn't it?
Send all submissions to: ktaylor@donet.com. I'll let the list know when
I've got enough material to post the page.
Thanks a bunch!

Subject: [DHBIS] Debravation
Hi there,
I've heard various people talk about a promotion CD of Debravation. Wich
includes totaly different songs than on the Debravation wich has been
released.
One of the tracks is suppose to be a song called Wild Horses (an old
Rolling Stone song if I am right). I Heard Debbie perform this song on
her Debravation tour in London. It just gave me goose flesh all over (if
that's the right expression).
Could anyone tell me if this CD has ever been released (as a promo). And
if so, is there any chance of getting a copy or getting it taped
somehow? Please let me now, and we could work out some deal.

Subject: [DHBIS] Tribute CD
Dear DHBIS-People,
i got several requests for the "A Tribute To
Blondie"-CD EP (see below), my band Germ Attack released in April
1996. We are a band from Berlin / Germany and have always been huge
fans of Blondie. In the early 80's we started as a punkband and
released many records. Our music is much poppier and we're good
musicians nowadays. The Blondie Tribute originally was just plannaed
as a very small run (300 copies) 4 Song 7" EP, but our label forced
us to put out a CD-EP instead and so we recorded 5 songs
(Heart Of Glass, In The Sun, Denis*, Hanging On The Telephone*, Dreamin
and made another version of H.O.G. with turkish lyrics). The total
playing time is 17:something. We got a female guest vocalist, one
and a half song is sung by our own vocalist and one other by a semi-
famous vocalist from a german wave band).
[* we know that these sons are itself covers]
The reviews for the record were quite good. The songs are close to the
original but we also made it sound like Germ Attack. Those of you
who know the guitar version (demo) of Heart Of Glass might have an
impression what the difference is.
The huge problem with ordering single copies directly is that postage
is DM 10 or 16 ($7 or $11) for one CD-EP. The CD itself, ie. the price
i have to pay to pur label is about DM 10. I could airmail a 14 (???) CD
paket for DM 24 (2kg). That probably would keep the price below $10
postpaid (if someone is willing o spread them within the states). I'm
not interested in making any profits, it's hust an offer from a fan
to other fans...
Even if your not interested in purchasing the CD have a look at
http://www.fokus.gmd.de/nthp/employees/mhs/ga/ga_disco.html#blondie
You'll probably LOVE the cover...
Punk On! - tB!
IMPORTANT: I'm NOT subscribed to DHBIS, so if there's some interest
please get in touch with me directly! If i remember correctly the
maintainer of the list is in touch with Debbie and Chris, i'd like to
forward them a copy of the CD...

The Debravation Producer's Cut is the only "extra" CD I know of. It is
not a promo. It was essentially the format the record had before the
record co. had it redone (when the various collaborations were added).
It contains different versions of Rain, Mood Ring, Dancing Down The Moon;
also extra track The Date; and the Joey Ramone duet version of Standing
In My Way.
It does not contain Wild Horses, although they did do it every day on the
1993 UK Debravation tour... for the obvious reason that Debravation came
before the tour!
I was considering, with permission of course, putting out a 2-CD live
recording from one of the UK shows (Cardiff), which I have on DAT.
It's better than *any* recording of any show I've ever heard (for
quality, that is). This is a big project though....

Went to a Laser Rock show at the planetarium in Golden Gate Park, San
Francisco last night. The emcee asked the audience to call out any acts whose
music they'd like to hear included in the laser-light show. No one responded,
so i shouted out "BLONDIE!!!" He said "Did you say Blondie?" and several
people in the audience laughed. Then he said that would be like having ABBA
or something like that. Whatever!
After the show, i snuck over to his list of acts that people requested and
wrote in BLONDIE when he wasn't looking! ~;-)

Both Blondie and ABBA are respected in the UK for producing some of the best
music of the early 80s, although ABBA's dress sense sometimes left something

how little official live stuff (especially videos) exists of Debbie and Blondie.

Huh, well, I thought I transcribed Barry's cover version list exactly...
but I may have made some mistakes in there. I apologize for any
inconvenience. I had Wild Horses listed as:
Wild Horses (Rolling Stones)
From a 1993 version of the album "Debravation" (Unreleased)
Other than the list Barry provided me, I had no knowledge of Debbie doing
this song. Now that I look at the list again though, it may have been a
mistake. I did not say anywhere, however, that this was on the "Producer's
Cut" CD.
Am I repeating myself? I just got home from a fab night out... I'm a bit
tipsy hehe *hiccup*
I have no idea why I listed those songs the way I did... to tell you the
truth I haven't even studied the list since I typed it up way back when. I
will correct these this week. Thank for the eagle eye!

My little 8 year old daughter, Miyuki, has a favorite Deborah Harry song-
"End of the Run" from Def, Dumb & Blonde. She is handicapped and mildly
retarded so she calls it "Sleeping Drunk" from one of the lyrics. Does
anyone have a video of this song? It would probably have to be a home
made concert video, since I don't think anything was ever done
commercially.
I will trade one of my custom Deborah Harry dolls for a copy of the above
song on video. I have 3 different dolls from which you can choose. All
are around 10" tall and include a custom picture box.
Doll #1 - Debbie from the Blondie era-she is dressed in that famous
little black dress, black tights and black boots. The classic "Blondie"
image.
Doll #2 - Atomic Debbie-dressed in torn black tights, yellow * black
Vulture shirt, black boots, black plastic garbage bag jacket and long
yellow gloves.
Doll #3 - Strike Me Pink - Debbie undressed in pink underwear (bra,
panties & garterbelt) with black stockings and pink satin gown and robe.
She also has a shocking pink vinyl raincoat and thigh high pink vinyl
boots (in case she wants to go flashing on a rainy day). Also comes with
a little black whip. I know this really sounds a little kinky, but is is
really cute and tastefully done. Honest!
Or is no video is available-will trade all 3 for an autographed pair of
Deb's pink high heels.

I'd say the best way to get a hold of Making Tracks would be to dig through
the book piles at your local used book stores. I've found 2 copies that
way - within a month of each other!!! Sorry I don't have an extra to
sell to anyone - I already gave it as a gift to another Blondie fan. But
that would be my suggestion. Does anyone know the average price Making
Tracks sells for amongst rock collectors? Oh, that reminds me! Another
place to look for it would be at rock/record conventions which usually
take place in most major cities at least once a year. These kind of
collectibles are what most dealers specialize in. Another suggestion
would be to place an ad in Goldmine Magazine and see what kind of responses
you get.

Does anybody have info on this Blondie bootleg?

A couple of weeks ago I mentioned Debbie was in a short film. Well, here is
what I found out:
It was shown at the Black Maria Film and Video Festival at Jersey City
State College on Friday, 1/19/96
Sandman (1995) #605 19 min. b/w 35mm on video - Marco Capalbo (winner:
Director's Choice)
This short narrative featuring William Hickey and Deborah Harry is a
cimentic portrait of an aged gentleman's austere life. Graceful camera work
reveals the protagonist living in sparse circumstances with his cat. He is
a trooper of sorts and encounters a rakish younger woman (Debbie) whose coy
glances ignite the dream of a romantic interlude one rainy night.

I'd have to disagree about it being falsetto. For most males to sing
that high, it would have to be in falsetto, but I don't think she does.
Actually most females don't even really have a falsetto.
Then again, it depends what you mean exactly when you say "falsetto".
I've been taking voice lessons for years and still haven't found an exact
definition for the word that isn't argued by many others. Some take it to
mean "head voice", which is basically using orifices in the head for
resonance as opposed to the chest or other areas. Others say that the
physical use (and open-ness) of the throat which determines if a note is
falsetto or not. There are also other opinions & definitions.
If you listen closely to Debbie's vocals (in particular on HoG), you
can hear how she comes right down naturally from the high notes in certain
parts to what is definitely a use of her "natural voice", so I'd find it
hard to believe if she actually is opening the throat in a so-called
"falsetto"(like in the way a lot of males would do to achieve higher
notes...i.e.: Frankie Vally, Beach Boys, BeeGees type of singing).

I bet it does. Though, I actually find a lot of higher stuff easier sometimes.

Union, Union, Union City blue.
I stand by dirge. It reminds me of the "plan" in "Of

banal, meaningless existence and scheme...to escape it, to
no avail. Just the way she sings "What are we gonna do?"
seems so sad. I just get the overpowering feeling that
there's nothing they can do to escape and they/she know(s)
it. Maybe not as hopeless as "Downbound Train" but pretty
close.>>
So what do you all think? Opinions are welcome, especially
those that agree with mine and disagree with his. I will
concede the point that the song starts out "sad," but ends
on a positive note.

I saw her sing this on the DD&B Tour when she played at the World in NYC. I
have never seen any footage live or otherwise. These dolls sound really
great. How much to buy one? And how exactly did you cast her head for it?
For example, is it created from a pre-existing doll (like Barbie) and given

"I Love Playing With Fire" was a song Joan performed with her band The
Runaways during the 70's. It appears on The Best of The Runaways album
as well as on Joan Jett's Album.

I read somewhere long ago that Debbie wrote the lyrics to this song during
the filming of "Union City." The film was shot on location in, naturally,
Union City NJ, and I think she said she wrote the song while waiting for
her ride back to Manhattan after a day's filming.

I haven't been watching TV very much, but my records show that "Sabrina"

It seems terribly sad to me, especially the way she sings "What are we
going to do?" The pitch of her voice lowers as she sings that phrase,
almost drawing you down into a whirlpool. Whenever I've found myself
saying "what am I going to do?" it's always in response to something
bad. There's a scene in Aliens when their ship is destroyed and Bill
Paxton says "NOW what are we going to do?" It's something you say
when you're trapped or unhappy with your possibilities. She does sound
as if she's trapped in drudgery (and if you've seen Union City (the
city) then you know drudgery's the right word for it).
Where did you find the movie? I've never seen it but I sure would
like to.

Greetings everybody. Just wanted to add a new date for the Jazz Passengers
tour. They will be in San Francisco on October 25 at Bimbo's 365. Tix are
$20 (so I'm told). Bimbo's, for those of you who have never had the
pleasure of attending a show there, is located between North Beach and
Fisherman's Wharf on Colombus. It is a very cool lounge that is not "retro"
: it's been the same decor all along.
If I heare more I'll pass it along.(Last time the Jazz Passengers were here
they played live at a local radio station and there was a live studio
audience-if you got there early enough.)

>From Issue No. 1 Friday, September 4, 1981 Austin Chronicle
Debbie Harry
KooKoo (Chrysalis)
Debbie Harry being produced by Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers? Tres =
Chic (if you'll pardon the saying) and, on paper at least, something of =
a dream date. Harry and her lover, Svengali Chris Stein, must have =
imagined her singing and their brilliant use of rhythmic spaces coming =
together for something as intoxicating as "Call Me," and Stein's =
unflagging desire to place himself and Harry in the vanguard of pop =
dovetails nicely with Rodgers and Edwards' status as the reigning =
wizards of black music.
Well, it's been pointed out before that the shadow falls somewhere =
between the idea and the reality, and KooKoo is no exception. Most of =
the album could be a soundtrack for a movie called "I, A Singer" as =
Harry fails to find the cheery insouciance she needs for Rodgers and =
Edward's charmingly dumb lyrics and Stein's conceptual failures. She's =
rarely sounded more flat and unconvincing, and the producers mark time =
with music dull enough to fill a niche on a AOR playlist. Then the =
record turns itself around abruptly on the last three songs -- the funky =
and hilarious "Under Arrest" and "Military Rap," followed by a sultry =
piece of exotica called "Oasis," which could be the soundtrack for a =
movie called "Deborah Harry and the 1,001 Nights," The album isn't =
really worth having; this song is.
-Chris Walters
A note from me, Thomas, to Chris et al, "This is not my review. I =
thought it was delightful to pick up the Chronicle and see some press =
today. I see guts and genius is this work! Note the #1 Jam Was Moving =
is not mentioned in this early review."

First, my apologies for the extra text that was attached to the end of my
message about the Debbie Harry dolls. Louis was right-my mistake.
John Scott asked if the dolls looked like Debbie. They really look like
her. A couple of years ago a model kit from Japan of Judge Anderson
(from the Judge Dredd comics) was issued and available at the Target
chain of stores. The sculptor was a big Debbie Harry fan and used the
Rockbird album cover as a model. So the face on this kit is Debbie!
I use the head from this kit and the body from a doll called "Happy To
Be Me" to make the basic doll-with many modifications. The body is a
realistically proportioned body, not a Barbie type exagerated body.
After assembly and painting (about 3 hours worth), I construct the
display box with color laser copies of a box mock-up of my own design.
It takes about an our of cutting, pasting, applying the clear window
and the insert, etc. The dolls are dressed in either custom or off the
shelf outfits. Both the Judge Anderson kits and the Happy to Be Me dolls
are no longer on the market. I do sell the dolls - but always prefer to
trade for Deborah Harry stuff.

I recently found Rockbird on cd at a used cd store for just $6.99!!!!
I had never gotten around to buying the import so I was glad to get it at
last on cd (I've had the tape for years now).
Listening to it on cd gave me a new appreciation of this album - it may
very well be my favorite of Debbie's solo projects. It's really peppy and
fun. Who is Seth Justman who produced most of the songs and who Debbie
cowrote alot of the tracks with? What else has this person produced/written?
I really like the songs that Seth and Debbie came up with - Buckle Up,
Got Me In Trouble, and Free To Fall. They have a real 50's/girlgroup
sound to them. I also love the Nile Rodgers/Debbie track Beyond the
Limit - that has always been one of my favorite Debbie songs. I also
think that the Toni C/Debbie tune I Want You is great.
Anybody else have comments on Rockbird? I'd like to know more about Seth
Justman and how he came to work with Debbie.

I've been looking for Blondie guitar tab myself for a while now too. I
plan to do a couple Blondie tunes in a new side project cover band thing
that I'm just doing for fun. I can figure them out basically, but I want to
be as accurate as possible. I haven't had much luck either, so if you find

In case some people aren't aware, there are currently tabs (or at least
some chord progressions) to about 5 Blondie songs on the OLGA/Harmony

Yeah! I think that FREE TO FALL has to be one of the best Debbie tracks
ever! It's sort of a sad tune though... I heard the video is cool...
never seen it... Also, BRITE SIDE on Def, Dumb and Blonde reminds me of
that song... perhaps the flip mood of FREE TO FALL. Yes. Rockbird is a
great cd.

I also have to agree that ROCKBIRD is my least favorite solo album.
However, I too, would never trade it! I think "In Love With Love" is
one of her best, but the cd version is awful compared to the powerful
remix done by Justin Strauss (Heart Of Fire mix) and the London remix.
I personally think DEF, DUMB & BLONDE is her best so far. After all,
"Sweet And Low", "I Want That Man", "Maybe For Sure", "Brite Side",
and "End Of The Run" were excellent songs. Does anyone else agree?

Subject: [DHBIS] Ranking Debbie's Solo Albums
Everybody's talking about how "Rockbird" is their least favourite Debbie
album. I'd have to disagree--"Koo Koo" is my least favourite. Anyway,
here's the order of Debbie's solo stuff according to how often I listen to them:
1. Debravation: I really think this one has the most number of interesting
songs. This one didn't really grab me when I first heard it, but upon
repeated listenings, the music is the most complex of all her work.
2. Def, Dumb, And Blonde: There's a lot of really great standout songs on
this one (Sweet And Low, I Want That Man, End Of The Run, I'll Never Fall In
Love) and some real clunkers (Maybe For Sure, Bugeye).
3. Rockbird: Although it's a bit bland overall, I think that Buckle Up and
I Want You are really overlooked and are fabulously fun songs.
4. Koo Koo: Extremely uneven, dull, etc. etc. I do like a few of the
songs, but I really rarely listen to the whole album.
On a different subject, I've changed the collage on my "Wit And Wisdom Of
Deborah Harry" page, and fixed a link to pictures of her that didn't work
before. I'm still accepting submissions of quotations from Debbie if
anybody has any more. Email me at ktaylor@donet.com, and the quote site is
at http://www.donet.com/~ktaylor/deb.htm.
Finally, "Heavy" will debut in Dayton, Ohio on September 20 at the Little
Art Theatre in Yellow Springs if anybody lives anywhere remotely nearby.

I think you are talking about a CD-R that was pressed for Chrysalis
Executives in the UK. My understanding is that Chrysalis was thinking
about a Live Lp . A 2 Trk live CD with contains Love TKO ( original by T.
Penegrass) and Wild Horses ( Original by Stones) . The songs are brilliant.
Due to the termination of the record contract, it did not come about. Shame
because some of Deborah's best works are
done Live.
I believe that Chrysalis UK do have at least 2 Blondie Concerts and 2
Deborah Harry concerts in their vaults.
I received my copy ( only a handful made)from a Chrysalis rep, who requested
that I never distribute/copy the disc. If you are ever in London and want to
hear it you can call me up and buy me a drink.

Hi Mike,
Actualy, I think Videodrome is Debbie's best movie! But then again I'm
a big Cronenberg fan and a big James Woods fan. I just think that film
best captures the spooky side of the Debster - nobody else could have
played spaced out, kinky Nikki Brand the way that Debbie did. I think
she's just amazing in it! Especially the end scene when she's talking on
the television. Debbie had such a strong media image that she fit in
in perfectly with the whole idea of Videodrome. Remember "public life on
television is more real than private life in the flesh".
Any other Videodrome fans out there?

Yes, I'm sure it would.
But theoretically, if someone had the songbooks (Parallel Lines, ETTB,
Autoamerican, Best of, DD&B), how would these be put on the net?
Scanned images? Or is there a way to enter musical data somehow in

YES!! Along with most all of Cronenberg's early films. It was the first
film I remember seeing Debbie in ... the significance of her character's
name (nikki brand) hit me full force when when she burned herself with a
cigarette and then offered it to James Woods. That was my interpretation,
anyway.

Indubitably. Def, Dumb, and Blonde is my favorite Debbie Harry solo.
She went wayyyyyyyy out of her way to deliver this time around. I
mean, how many albums have 15 songs on it like this one? I don't
think there is a stiff track on the entire CD. Anyway, that's my
opinion.

Well, for guitar chords, what the guitar is tuned at and the letters should
be enough. Basically just the chords.
How is it there exists a web site that has the chords to: Denis, Free to

Debbie is pretty good in that one too, yet the movie isn't "so messed up".

In fact that is how I came to be a Blondie fan. I saw Debbie in
Videodrome and I was an instant fan - then I went out and bought all of
Blondie's albums.

If you read the information at the Harmony Central OLGA site that I
mentioned in the earlier post (the site Steph is referring to), there is
some info there on the legality & accepted format of posted music tablature,
sheet music, etc. Once again, it's
http://www.harmony-central.com/Guitar/tab.html
IMHO, if anyone has the ability and inclination to post some sheet music or
tab, and as long as you give credit to the original writer(s), go for it.
I'm sure it would be much appreciated by many musicians out there (including
myself) who are searching for it.

Actually, that brings up another topic. Does anyone have a copy of
Intimate Strangers? I've been to several movie rental places (including
the mom and pop type places) and they never even heard of IS. If anyone

I have to say that DEBRAVATION is her best to date. I would rate it
first, then DEF DUMB & BLONDE, and so on. I think most or all of the
tracks on the DEBRAVATION album are great, but very underrated. Its a
shame, too. "BRITE SIDE" and "MAYBE FOR SURE" are my faves on that one.
On DEBRAVATION, If I had to choose two, I'd say: "KEEP ON GOING" and
"STANDING IN MY WAY." SWEET PEA (BRIAN)

Hi
The JP's sound good (at least I think so). Their albums
previous to 'In Love' were mostly intstrumental. I haven't actually
found any of these but this is what I'm told. Starting with
'In Love', the JP's wanted to have more singing so they got
people like Debbie. The JP's then did tours and stuff with Debbie
doing most of the touring (and singing).
Unless I'm very much mistaken, in the new album (due out in October
or November), Debbie does most if not all of the singing. This is the
impression I got when I saw her and the JP's in Saskatoon in June.
Hope this helps and hopefully I know what I'm talking about :)

Folks,
I have to agree with Yagazusi69. I think Debbie's nude scene was very well
done. Admittedly, it was probably the MAIN reason I wanted to see the film
when it was first released(I was 14, so I think it's understandable), but
I've really grown to like the film as a whole.
One question for those who have seen it:
Did Nikki Brand ever really exist or was she a creation of Videodrome?A
friend of mine has the novelization, and he says she was never real. In the
film, they say "She was Videodrome's first victim."
I've always took this to mean that she was dead before he ever met
"her". Any thoughts?

Debbie was with The Wind In The Willows. I do hope the forthcoming

seen her for about 3 years. She said they sold two of Chris Stein's

and Roberta said she really likes it when people get dressed up for
the exhibit!
There were 71 photos in the display, about 9 of them featuring Debbie.

I think that Nikki Brand was an agent for Videodrome - and she may very well
have been just a hallucination (already dead) when Max Renn first sees here
on the Rena King Show. Remember he has already been exposed to the
Videodrome signal and Brian Oblivion is on that show too and he's just an
image on video - not real either.
I could talk abou this movie for hours!

Subject: [DHBIS] Solo Ratings
Someone asked us to rank Debbie's solo albums. Hard for me
to do that, because I think all of them have their high
points and low points--none of them are as consistently
excellent as AutoAmerican, Parallel Lines, or Eat to the
Beat (or even the earlier albums). But here goes:
1. Def, Dumb & Blonde - I think if this had been Debbie's
*first* solo album, she would have had no trouble making the
transition from Blondie to solo performer. It has Mike
Chapman's trademark production, plus *lots* of songs with
incredible potential as singles. "Get Your Way,"
"Lovelight," "He Is So," "Calmarie," "I'll Never Fall in
Love," and "Bugeye" are all great. I'm less fond of the
hardcore songs ("Bike Boy" and "Forced to Live"), and "I
Want That Man" is my least favorite of all DH's singles.
The only "problem" with the album - as with many of her solo
projects - is the lack of unity...it seems like a mix of
styles with no underlying center.
2. Debravation - I think this one contains some of Debbie's
best solo material ever. "I Can See Clearly," "Stability,"
"Keep on Going," and "Rain" are all fantastic. I also like
the two bonus tracks--a side of DH we don't often see. I
rank this one second because I think too many of the songs
are drab and uninspired. "Mood Ring" is dull, and "Lip
Service" seems phony (kind of a sex joke that isn't funny).
I don't like "The Fugitive" at all (which is really saying
something, since it's the only song DH has ever recorded
that I can say that about)...it just seems so contrived.
Like DD&B, this one lacks unity--it's more of a collection
of potential singles than an "album."
3. Rockbird - I thought this one was DH's attempts to return
to her "roots," a la Blondie & Plastic Letters. It strikes
me as the simplest of her albums, musically and lyrically,
and really shows off her voice in places. Includes many
great songs on the first half ("French Kissing," "Buckle
Up," "In Love With Love," "You Got Me In Trouble"), but I've
always felt that the second half (beginning with "Free to
Fall") is a letdown. I sometimes have a hard time paying
attention to it--those songs don't grab me the way the other
ones do.
Strangely enough, I think this album is the most unified
of her solo projects--it's just a feel-good, have-some-fun
album that isn't trying to make any artistic statements. I
think Seth Justman's production helped a lot there.
4. Koo Koo - I hate to put this last, since not too long ago
I vented some frustration at all the KooKoo bashing. I
think this is an album I "admire" more than enjoy. DH was
consciously trying to break away from the Blondie image, and
she *really* took a chance with KooKoo. In some ways I like
the starker sound, but in others I prefer the multilayering
of the later solo projects. This one has some great songs,
including "The Jam Was Moving" and "Jump Jump," but overall
the album doesn't seem the best vehicle for DH's talents. I
think the cover is the best of all her covers, though...by
far.
This one, too, is unified (IMHO), but it's organized
around a negative center rather than a positive center. By
that I mean that Rockbird seems consciously to be trying to
be fun and upbeat--it has a goal. KooKoo was just trying to
*not* to be Blondie. Still, I end up coming back to it
every few months for a listen, and still get a thrill out of
the opening bass line on "Jump Jump" (which has become my
goddaughter's favorite song).
I've written too much, as usual, but felt the need to vent
these opinions, which have been bottled up inside me too
long.

"Videodrome" is one of those movies that you have to see many times before
you can even begin to explore how many levels there are to it. I've seen it
about three times myself, and each time I take away something I didn't
notice before. Even if Debbie weren't in it, this would still probably be
one of my favourite movies. Debbie's presence just adds that extra nifty
appeal to it (though I am not among the fans of the scene between her and
James Woods at his house... bleh).
I heard from a friend of mine that in an old interview about this movie,
James really slammed Debbie's lack of professionalism on the set, saying he
didn't like working with "non-actors" and things. Can anybody confirm if
this is true? If it is, I think he should cut her some slack... this was
her first major movie role, after all!

If you want them for printout or screen display purposes,Adobe Acrobat is
the way to go.There is also a music-setting system called MusiTeX (well, its
ASCII spelling anyway)which is a superset of TeX.
From a musical standpoint, there has to be a standard music data type
format but I'm not sure which one you want.People talk of "MIDI files" but
MIDI is a physical interface: I don't think it specifies a particular data
type.
Particular systems like the old Synclavier(a sort of musician's Lisp
Machine and so priced)had a standard view of music for
scoring,arranging,altering(transposing,time signature changes,printing in
different clefs and styling)and performance.I have no idea what happened to
that.FWIW Destri had either a Synclavier or Fairlight and so maybe some
interesting files still exist. It's highly doubtful their availability would
become possible...

Well, sure, midi files are basically the standard for non-sample type music
on Macs, PCs and Amigas. A subset of the midi standard is "general midi",
which identifies a certain number of common instruments and channels.
There's links to more info on this in my web page... under music, general
somewhere in there... :) or try a search on one of the web search engines.

Again, I will have to go with DEBRAVATION as my most favorite Deborah
Harry album. I have heard some on here say that this album lacks unity
and that there are too many varied styles on it. Well, *WHO* really
defines what style is anyway? I think Debbie has a great potential to
show her many sides and put them all onto one album and its great. Don't
you get tired of buying an album where all the songs sound the same??? I
think that that buying a Debbie album is a fabulous investment. When I
listen to DEBRAVATION, I can hear sad songs (Tear Drops), fun songs
(Stability), inspirational songs (Keep On Going), campy songs (Lip
Service), dance songs (I Can See Clearly), jazzy songs (Strike Me Pink),
and a whole lot more. I find that with each listening, I grow closer to
each song. Sure, when I first bought the CD I sold it a few weeks later,
because I was not into Harry as much as I am now. I bought the CD again
a year later and listened more carefully to the songs and the sounds,
and find that its my favorite album ever in my whole musical collection.
Again, I've found that most of her albums are like that. Upon first
listening to it, you sort of ignore the words and listen to the music,
but when you take in the lyrics first and then mix that with the music
then you find that you can't put the freaking CD down! hehe
I can't wait for the JP album and hopefully a new Harry album soon.
I wonder if she's been signed to a new label or might be soon?
I've heard that she no longer has a label...

That's about the going price for the changing image cover. For those of you
who haven't seen it, it's like one of those changing image cards you'd get
in a pack of bubble gum or something... you move it from side to side and
the picture changes... with the little horizontal grooves....

There's a book out on Cronenberg that has a lot of information on the
making of "Videodrome" with commentary by Cronenberg - you can find it at
Coliseum bookstore in NYC in their film section. Check it out if you're in
NYC and interested in the film. (If I see it again I'll pass the title
along)
Re the Woods slam, other entertainers who act, like Dolly Parton, say
he's totally professional on the set & not a problem, so it's probably best
taken with a grain of whatever..although Woods is always good for the

In reply to rating debbie's solo albums i think its quite a difficult thing
to do, not least because tastes change all the time.sometimes you can love
one album, the next day you are ambivalent to it.generally though i would
agree with Stevens ratings.
the race for best album has to be between 'Debravation'and'Def, Dumb and
Blonde'.i 've always thought the stand out tracks on 'Def' were
'Calamarie','Brite Side' and 'End of the run'. 'brite side 'has to be
debbies best solo single, and surely one of the stand out tracks of her solo
career, while 'end of the run' is an epic of faded dreams and aspirations we
all could relate to.
'debravation'is also a very good album, though i would have to say its
marginally weaker than its predecessor. as with all her albums there are a
couple of duff tracks, but overall its quality is pretty even. my favourites
have to be ' i can see clearly', 'communion' and 'rain'.
i've always liked 'kookoo' so it always pains me to have people criticse it.
at the time when it came out it was very successful, and it was quite well
liked by the critcs in the UK. i think the essential point to remember is
that she did that album in that style to get away from the 'blondie' style,
and of course the band were still a unit at the time, and had not
disbanded.any disappointments with the album could be allayed because
blondie were always going to produce another whether the solo album was a
success or not.'def' would never have a first solo album because blondie
still existed and the styles were too similar.favourite songs are 'chrome',
'oasis' and 'jump jump'. i remember reading one reviewers comments who said
the main problem with the band was that the creators came form two distinct
styles, one was chic the other blondie, one was 'pure' disco, the other
anything/everything.perhaps this got in the way. anyway i think it was that
summer that i bought jimmy destri's solo album and fell in love with his
song ' living in your heart'.
i've written far too much too, and alot of it is probably nonsense.roll on
the next album.

Yes, indeed you did. When I viewed the sheets, it was kinda blurry, but

I wouldn't call it "well done", it's just that it's the only Debbie nudity

Debbie Harry is going back to her roots - her Blondie roots! Yes, the
sexy '70's pop icon, without whom there could never have been a Madonna, has
reunited with four orginal members of her band.
Debbie and company ahve already recorded two super tracks with producer
Mike Chapman, and a full album is in the works. (No label yet, but, come on,
who wouldn't want to snap up this comeback team).
And should it all fall happily into place - a record deal, hit singles,

Subject: [DHBIS] Deborah Harry dolls
Several of you have asked me to repeat my Deborah Harry doll message of
last week since, because of my goof in attaching that long Netscape file
to the end of my message, some of you couldn't open the file due to it's
length.
I am looking for a video-probably homemade-of "The End of The Run." Will
trade one of my custom Deborah Harry dolls-I have 3 different:
The first is Deb in a little black dress w/black tights & black boots-
the classic Blondie image.
The second is Deb as she appeared in the "Atomic" video-torn black
tights, black & yellow Vulture shirt, black boots, yellow gloves and
black garbage bag jacket.
The third is Strike Me Pink Deb - Deb in her underwear-pink panties,
bra, garter belt, black stockings, and pink silk gown & robe. Plus hot
pink plastic raincoat and thigh-high boots. Also comes with a little
black whip.
All are roughle 10 1/2 inches tall (a 1/6 scale Deb!)
All three come in a nice custom photo boxes.
Will trade one for "End of the Run" video (for my 8 year old daughter)
or will trade all 3 for an autographed pair of Deb's pink high heels.
Scott Free had asked me to post a selling price-I have sold about a
dozen for $125 each. Cost to make the basic doll (the one with the black
dress) is roughly $75 in parts and 4 to 5 hours in labor. I have given
away or traded another dozen. Right now I am looking for the above
mentioned stuff in trade for the three dolls. I have extra black dress
versions to trade for other Deb stuff, preferably bootleg type videos.
I am saving the Atomic and Strike Me Pink dolls in case I get a response
on the trade deal, since they are one of a kind and I don't have parts
(outfits) to make any quantity.
I have two different boxes - one is a Blondie box with the group on the
front and a photo collage of deb and the group on the back. The other
is strictly Deborah Harry - with a 3/4 shot of her on the front and the
large Surface face shot (plus a couple smaller ones) on the back.
Anyone interested in one of the dolls is welcomed to send a trade list
of stuff they have.
My mail address is: Bob Sellstedt
9307 Hillingdon Road
Woodbury, Mn 55125
I would also be happy to send the doll out for inspection prior to
purchase or trade.
Thanks Bob Sellstedt sellsbe@gw.startribune.com

it was in the cards that Blondie's reunion was just around the corner. I

Seriously, there is still nothing finalized... there are no details
available because there are no details. At best, it's negotation

I attended a Synclavier show back when:it was very complicated, and
proprietary, and expensive. But it did stuff no one else is doing yet.(Shades
of Symbolics...)Zappa used one up until he died.I never got the chance to
really use one: it was in reality a full-blown computer that dealt with
music as other machines do ASCII or EBCDIC.
My only experience with MIDI is with the old Ataris that had a MIDI
port. It's been around a long while and I should know a lot more than I do:I
know it's nowhere near what's possible. My interest in musical electronics
is limited on purpose because I thought if I ever got into it seriously,I'd
become obsessed.I know a guy who scores and plays out these neat Nelson
Riddle/Don Costa orchestrations and sequences them up with bunches of MIDI
keyboards and an Alesis ADAT.He can arrange a tune and print up a whole
orchestra of sheet music, properly annotated,in correct clef and key for
each instrument (many band instruments are transposing,i.e.sheet music for
them is in a different key than it really plays in,so that the printed C is
really a Bb,Eb or F#.)
All this is great except who is he going to get to play his stuff? It's a
pretty expensive proposition and that's why large ensembles are dead...So
you wind up with bunches of synth tracks, cold and dead,no one will ever
play.If you can sing you can put vocals on them, but if I could sing I
wouldn't be pissing with MIDI,I'd be fronting a band.
My last attempt at singing in public (I did "Baby Got Back" at a Holiday
Inn karaoke...)ended when a big black guy revealed a Smith & Wesson under
his jacket.(Looked like a 19 with the cocobolo grips....)Maybe he thought I
was dissing Mix or blacks in general.I actually thought it was a funny
tune, but the incident pissed me off in a big way.Since then,I have to say I
now look at Altamont in a slightly different light.

From: Evaristo Lito Sandoval
Subject: Re: [DHBIS] Solo Ratings
Hmm...Lito's opinion:
1.) DEF, DUMB & BLONDE
This is my favorite. The music is diverse enough, yet still cohesive. My
favorite song is "Bike Boy." I was so stoked when she did it in Berkeley on
the Escape From NY tour. My least favorite song is "End of the Run." I
just think it starts out soooo bad lyrically. I would love to remix this
cutting out those opening lines. "I Want that Man" is my cruising theme
song. I love "Maybe For Sure." Also the surprise of "Forced To Live." I
do feel "Bugeye" is a clunker only cuz the lyrics make no sense to me. But
it sounds so damn good.
2.) DEBRAVATION
i think this has Debbie's strongest vocals, but something about the project
as a whole just holds it back. The eclectic factor backfires and
cohesiveness is lost. Of course, I've not heard the producer's cut. The
opening salvo of songs is strong, even the tired rap of "Stability." "Lip
Service" was the big surprise for me here. A very strong dance cut indeed.
"Dancing Down the Moon" and "Standing in My Way" are also two standouts,
recalling Blondie without sounding like retread. The last two extra cuts
are pretty but so out of place.
3.)ROCKBIRD
I agree that this is bland, but still better than KOO KOO. "I Want You" and
"French Kissing" are two strong cuts. "In Love With Love" was disappointing
after hearing it live. But it's still a nice one. "You Got Me in Trouble"
is fun albeit weak but I love: "you got the biz/I can't reziz" My other
favorite cuts are the title track and "Beyond the Limit.".
4.) KOO KOO
This album has no personality, which is surprising as it's Debbie. I like
"Under Arrest" and "Military Rap." I certainly like "Backfired" more now
than when it was released. I rarley listen to the whole CD too. There's no
passion in the vocals and that's what knocks this to the bottom of the list.
But hey it is her and Chris' first venture from Blondie and the idea was to
not sound like Blondie and it doesn't.

They were like a series of miniseries.
First there was the series where he became a mob boss undercover...that was

Then there was the series...hmmm was it the second storyline or the third...I
think it was the third...
I think the second story line was the nazis then I believe it was the third
story line...about 15 or 20 episodes in that he was the record
producer...that segment was not long enough...with Tim Curry as the bad guy
and Beverly D'Angelo at her sexiest. Blondie was a very minor character in
only two or three episodes of that storyline.
I look forward to watching it.

Hey! It's good to finally hear some publicity about this. I hope that
the publicity hounds and paparazzi storm this reunion. I hope that it
makes MTV news pretty soon and that the fans who have forgotten
her/Blondie might tune in to the reunion and realize what they've
missed. Deborah Harry is the Goddess of Rock. Elvis might be king, some
think Madonna is the Goddess, but Madonna is the offspring of Harry! No
one realizes this.. hehe It was Ms. Harry who started the whole punk
girl glam scene. (Or, successful woman vocalist-based bands in the 70's
and 80's.) So, what am I saying here? Elvis and Blondie are the King and
Queen of Pop? That's what Im saying! (And Michael Jackson can go to
prison for all I care!)

I'm looking on the BRITE SIDE...this Blondie reunion is the best news to
come out of the Rock N Roll world for years! I can't wait to see,
perhaps a new video, of their first single. I want people to see just
how sexy and cool Deborah Harry is in her 50's, and how elegant and sexy
and cool she's always been. I never knew someone that YOUNG could ever
be so sexy. (Of course, her music ain't half that bad either!)
I just hope that, collaborating with her former band mates, that her own
music style that she has created over the years as a solo artist, is not
tarnished. If anything, it should put her back into the spotlight..and
even if the reunion is a flop, she should have another solo album ready
to be produced...

Er, *Debbie* was in three episodes... she starts out looking rather plain
and ends up looking fabuloso.
I wish she'd have come back later, it would be cool to have seen what

I have some 8 x 10s of her character with Glenn Frey's character, would you

DEBBIE WITH GLENN FREY??!?!! Be still my heart! Show us! Show us! I
thought their scenes together (albeit however few they actually were) in the
"Wiseguy" series were absolutely adorable. Anybody remember the part where
she's considering leaving the record company, and Glenn's telling her not to
go; she asks him why, he blushes and says "Don't embarrass me by making me
tell you..." It was so cute! Yes, Honourable List Moderator, give us some

Folks,
As some of you may know, I work for a video retailer and I've started
bugging our distributor about when "Heavy" is going to be available on
videotape. I usually get what we call "screeners" of tapes that are going
to be generally released months later(today I got "The Phantom" and
"Dragonheart"). These tapes are complete copies of the movies with the only
distraction being a time-bar across the bottom of the screen and
occasionaly the video distributor's logo super-imposed in a corner.
According to our distributor, "Heavy" is slated for release in November
and I should be recieving a screener of it in the next few weeks. I haven't
had the opportunity to see the film, but I am DYING to. As soon as I get my
hands on a copy, I'll make it available to anyone on the list who wants a
copy.
I've compiled all the Debbie/Blondie items I have in my collection and I'm
still missing a few things. If anyone out there is interested in trading,
e-mail me at the address after my name and we'll work something out.

I got a treat this morning when I walked into homeroom. Channel One (a

told us what she's doing now (w/ the JP's, etc) and stuff like that.
Then, for the Pop Quiz, they played a segment of the Diddy's Remix Edit

Basically the things I'm looking to trade for are anything I don't
allready have or better versions of the things I do have. Just e-mail me
with what you have and we'll work it out.
A couple of quick points on other subjects:
WGN doesn't seem to be running "Wiseguy" with ANY regularity, so catching
just the few episodes that Debbie is in is going to be tough.
According to next week's TV Guide(Sept. 21-27); Debbie will be on the first
episode of "Sabrina, The Teen-Aged Witch". The photo of her inside is
great(If only it could have been larger and in color)!
After successfully harrasing my distributor about "Heavy" on videotape, I
believe I will start next on "Drop Dead Rock". Has anybody had any luck
locating this film?
Oh well, only minor problems now that the Debbie Revolution is underway!
Long live the new order! Long live the new flesh!
Hope to hear from everyone soon.

Hi. I'm back from holidays (if you remember me..).
I was watching satellite tv way back in july(ish) and managed to
catch Deborah and the Jazz Passengers on the German version of the
Letterman Show (I believe it also is called The Late Show). I waited right
till the end of the programme for them to come on, panting in
anticipation, finally they arrived. Can't remember the song but it was
enjoyable (anyone else know what they sang?). I was very frustrated to
find out just how much the programme's format is like Letterman - they ran
out of time so cut the band off after Deb had sung only about one verse.
Grrr. This was the first time I've heard JP. It suits Deb well, and
reminded me of some of the quirkier tracks of her career. Hope we get to
hear more soon. Her dress was a bit frumpy though....:) (I know, I know,
we shouldn't mention superficial things like that...! But having said
that, it occurs to me how unusual/nice it is to have a star happy to age
gracefully rather than pretend she's 20 years younger than she is. She's
not a plastic Cher for instance... how can that woman claim to have had
virtually no plastic surgery!)
I was so excited when I read about the Blondie reunion in Melody
Maker. Thank heavens for small miracles. I'm going to see Erasure next
month and I'm greatly hoping they do the cover they are (supposedly) doing
for the (mythical) tribute album. Rapture isn't it? I'll let you know anyway.

The song she sang was 'Imitation of a Kiss'. I got it including the

I assume you mean cash instead of trade? Money is really not an object
with me. It doesn't cost me anything to make dubs of videotapes and send
them out, so I figure why not share what I have with those who want it? If
you don't have anything I need to trade, I'll still be happy to copy the
stuff you want. The more exposure Debbie's work gets; the better for her
career and the better for us, her fans. I'm just looking to fill in holes

I remember Channel One. It's a "news" program that is shown usually
during the morning at high schools (and I think junior high schools)
before the actual day starts. The way it works, I believe, is the show
is broadcast through satellite early morning (like 5AM or something) and
the schools video tape it, then show it through their closed-circuit
television systems themselves. So, more than likely, the show may stilll
be available through a little copying... But may have to get past a
principal or someone.... ;)
I'm going to see if I can get a copy of it from my old high school, Pearl

Hey people!
Not to burst anyone's bubble, but I was just on the phone with one of
my friends (the one who told me about the mention of Blondie on Ch1)
and Channel One and Blondie came up. He said Blondie wasn't mentioned
on Channel One, but on the radio. The only mention of Blondie on
Channel One was when they did the pop quiz and the credits. So,
Blondie wasn't mentioned on Channel One after all. Sorry about this!

SABRINA, THE TEENAGE WITCH (CC) FRI. SEPT 27th
*Debut:* Nickelodeon darling Melissa Joan Hart joins ABC's TGIF lineup as
Sabrina, a not-so-normal high-schooler with magical powers. Complicating
her efforts to live a typical teen life are Sabrina's wacky, witchy aunts,
Zelda and Hilda (Beth Broderick, Caroline Rhea), who must teach their
adolescent apprentice the art of their craft.
In the opener, Sabrina celebrates her 16th birthday---her first official
day as a witch---and accidentally turns the most popular girl in school
into a pineapple. To undo the deed, she appeals to the Witches Council,
whose members include characters played by Deborah Harry and Penn and
Teller.

Subject: [DHBIS] Debbie in Warhol book
Hi all--
There is a new Andy Warhol book (not sure if it's out yet) that has a Debbie
section!! Can't remember the name of it but one of the authors of the book is
Benjamin Liu. And it's purple.
Anyway, the book is a series of "chapters", which are really interviews with
different people who knew and worked with Andy. I didn't read Debbie's
section (don't wanna spoil it when I buy it!) but the pictures are FABULOUS
and include a reproduction of her Warhol portrait. AND I saw a Chris Stein
quote and 2 other photos of Debbie elsewhere in the book.
Don't know if it has been officially released yet. A co-worker brought it in
today. He got it from his pals at the Warhol Foundation.
Everybody run out to a local bookstore and demand it now!!
My 2 favorite personalities together again!!!!

Hello y'all,
I have re-done the web site in plain black on white for our color-impaired

There is the small picture from TV Guide on the News page for those of you

Also, some people wrote about the Melissa Joan Hart ("Sabrina") list.
Donald Lancon's "Clarissa/Melissa sites around the net" page is:

There is a FAQ about MJH, CEIA, and the mailing list at:

I would list the info on how to get on the list here, but due to syntax
rules I can't (long story).
Cheers!

"feet feet..." to "...fade away..." It was a great few seconds!

TO DYE FOR: Rumor of the week: late 70's rockers
BLONDIE are reuniting after 13 years. The facts:
According to frontwoman DEBORAH HARRY, the
truth is...maybe. "We had a little get-together,
to record, to feel each other out, basically, "says
Harry. "Bands seem to be all in cycles. You work
together a certain period of time. You break up for
a certain period of time. Then you have a reunion.
Look at what the Sex Pistols did. Van Halen's
getting back together." But while the still-blond
Harry waits to get back to her rock roots, she'd
busy honing her acting skills. She's now filming
the Fox TV movie "Confessions" (airing in Nov.),
in which she plays a Hollywood madam.
The item goes on to imply that the character she
plays in Copland is a reprisal of Delores, the
waitress she played in Heavy. Debbie says:
"She returns. Cha-cha-cha."
By the way, Heavy finally came to Jacksonville
this week. I think it's her best work yet (and
I was pleasantly surprised about how big a role
she actually played).

YAY!!!! I saw "Heavy" today, and gosh! Debbie is INCREDIBLE in this movie.
I hope everybody gets a chance to see it.
Overall, the film itself is SO well done, albeit not a terribly PLEASANT
piece to watch, but I can see immense growth in Debbie's acting abilities.
When I compare her technique in this to stuff she did even just 5 years ago
she's gotten so much better in such a short period of time (mind you, I
never thought Debbie was a bad actress, but at times she used to come off as
self-conscious). This is her real masterpiece of acting. And the niftiest
part for me was that she's the first person you see in the beginning of the
movie!! :)
--Blonde Ant
PS: Also can't wait to see Delores again in "Copland." Woo! :)

Hello everyone, This is great news about the Fox TV movie. I haven't
heard anything about this until the EW highlight. Does anyone know anything
else about this movie. Also no one has mention for awhile the GOLDFINGER
rendition on the James Bond cd??????? Did this ever happen?
Also I was looking at my video collection when I came across that one second
cameo by Deborah in NEW YORK STORIES. When I found out she was in this
movie I quickly ordered it only to recieve that "girl at party" roll . I
laughed for a long time over that one. I have never seen anyone mention
this on the list here so I thought I would. She did look fabulous though.

I know she sang this song live a long time ago with Blondie. It was a
punked out version. Was there suppose to be some studio production in
the recent past that consisted of Debbie recording "Goldfinger".

On the b-side of Sleeper's new single Statuesque (out this week) there's a
really rather good remix of their version of Atomic from the Trainspotting
soundtrack. This being the first thing of theirs I've _bought_ and
continuously listened to, all I can say is: lovely that you and the band
like Blondie and Debbie, Ms Wener, but stop trying so hard to _be_ Blondie!
They do a cover of an Elvis Costello song (Telescope) and I just keep
wanting to hum Sound Asleep/ Prescence Dear/ Dreaming.

Correct me if I'm wrong, all fellow musicians, but from what I remember from
WAAAAY back in my choral-training days, when someone "scoops," they sing a
lower note and slide up to their goal note. This occurs mostly in country
music, but also has been known to appear in jazz. And not to burst
anybody's bubble, but Debbie herself has been known to do it, mostly on her
slower stuff ("My Last Date With You" and "Prelude To A Kiss" come to mind).
I think it can be done effectively if it doesn't distract from the song, but
if someone does it too much it can get annoying. I remember my junior high
choir directer yelling at people for doing that, since technically it isn't
proper vocal form.
I'm going to have to go back and listen to Sleeper's "Atomic" again, though,
cos I don't remember her scooping a lot.

N.B I said a good _remix_ of their version of Atomic, not a remix of their
_good_ version of Atomic. (Though I didn't think they did too badly, but
considering it was just an almost exact copy.... what was the point?).
However, I have to say that I do rather like Sleeper. I'll get around to
buying their albums soon. Their singles are all great bits of pop. BUT i
heard them play live on tv a couple of nghts ago and Louise's voice
_really_ is ropey. I wish she's stop trying to ba all b-uh-reathy and

Nope your, right!
In lieu of having anything nice to say yesterday because of my own bad attitude,
I took it out on Sleeper's lead singer. My apologies. And yes......I do agree
that scooping can be very effective and tends to add style to a singer's
approach and yes Debbie's the queen of effective scoop action.
>I don't remember her scooping a lot.
Maybe not a lot, but definitely at the wrong time. Although, I have to admit, I
only heard Sleeper's version once through headphones at Virgin Records at a
listening station. But, I do remember distinctly her scooping during the
"tonight" sections of the verses. This would be an inappropriate time to "scoop
to it" as far as I'm concerned and most definitely not a portion of the song
you'll hear Debbie scooping on. Hey, I may be wrong as I've been many times
before and I'm not afraid to admit it either. But scoop or not, Sleeper's
vocalist sounds veryyyyyyyyy tired performing this song and usually scooping at
the wrong moments (usually high points), has a lot to do with sucking every
little bit of energy out of a piece. Anyway, no offense was intended.
From:
Your crabby ass Blondie fan from Northern California. I'll refrain from
inputting to the DHBIS until my attitude becomes a positive one once again.

Hey guys....
Does anyone know of a place that carries the giant subway UK promo poster
for
Heart of Glass? I have one, but a friend helpfully put tacks and tape on
it to keep
it up, and I wanted to get another to frame 'cuz it's so cool.
Intergalactic Garage
sold their last one and can't get anymore. Boo.

Does anyone know of any other place that carries a subway format poster
of the racing photo which appears on the inside sleeve of Remixed,
Remade, Remodeled? This is the picture of Deborah Harry dressed in a
yellow jacket, wearing blue racing gloves, and yellow goggles on top
of her head. Intergalactic Garage sold out and cannot get any more. They
say it is out of print. Why is it that when something is so extremely
popular and sells out, it goes out of print????? This goes for CD's
also. Anyway, if anyone knows how I can get a copy, please let me know!

Folks,
Well I just got to see the premiere episode of "Sabrina the Teenaged
Witch" and I just have to say that Debbie was under-used, to say the least.
I mean why do you go and cast Deborah Harry for a two-line part that
doesn't even warrant a cameo appreance of a star?
I mean, I like Penn and Teller, I really do. But even they aren't given a
good joke or bit of business to do. The whole scene with the Council of
Witches is a big dissapointment in a show that was, on the whole, pretty
cute and entertaining.
I guess I was just hoping for a "bigger" part for Debbie. What did the
rest of you think?

Yeah, I agree with Scott... But I think Debbie should always have a bigger
part!
It was cute, though:)
Hopefully, she'll be more important later....

Er, something like "Let's humour her" and "Do you have an appointment".

Hopefully they'll have her back if the show takes off, they sure were
pushing it with Sabrina appearances between the shows all night.

Pretty lame - the only one with less lines was the
guy from Penn and Teller who doesn't speak (I always
forget who's who).

Hi
If you missed Sabrina on Friday and you live in Canada, you probably
have another chance to watch/tape it. Here in Regina on STV, Sabrina's
on at 5:30 Regina time (7:30 Eastern time) today (sunday). I'm guessing it's
on across Canada on Global. I don't know about the american stations.
I hope this message gets to people in time. The show starts in 30
minutes!
bye
Bill

I think whatever exposure Debbie gets is good. Sure it was a small part but
you have to start somewhere. Soon EVERYONE will love her and we'll be seeing
Debbie everywhere (tv, movies, radio, toys, cereal boxes). We just have to be
patient and we'll all be rewarded!!!!

Subject: [DHBIS] Sleepy's cover of Atomic
Wooops, I mean Sleeper's cover of Atomic ;)
Blonde Ant said:

OK. I'm not done bagging on the Sleeper band. I went and bought
TRAINSTOPPING this weekend so I could take a conciencious 2nd listen
to it and no, not only does she scoop in all the wrong places, I'm not
sure where the scoops began and where they ended. (Yes, I am an
embellishing, editorializing, frustrated artist -- not to mention
sexually frustrated as well!! hahaha -- OK, I know, this is just a
little more information than the Debbie Society really wants to know
about :) -- Anyway, to make a long editorial longer, one that isn't
even an issue anymore....
I think her vocal rendition of "Atomic" could have been enhanced had
her band members put in a little extra time and effort to arrange the
instrumental part of the song to fit her vocal style. In this case,
an approach that does not remotely sound like the original. What
happens for me is, when I listen to it, the music begins and it is so
close to Blondie's original that when the vocals finally kick in, you
are left with a vacant feeling because it's not Debbie. To me, it
sounds like karoake in its most infamous glory.
My personal view is, if a band is going to cover a piece from another
band, they should give it their own creative style. Moreover, if the
cover recording does resemble the original, it had better not pale in
comparison to the original piece of work; and if it does....one
shouldn't be attempting to cover it in the first place.
Nevertheless, it's always nice to hear of artists paying homage to
Blondie even when the outcome is woefully inadequate.
Anyway, I'm done talking about this topic. And....forgive me as I am
still a little crabby ass!!
